Patient talking to GP

What is social prescribing?

Social prescribing is a way of enabling patients with emotional, practical, or social needs to access a range of non-clinical services, which are often provided by the local voluntary and community sector. GPs and other health care professionals can refer a patient to self-care support, advice and wellbeing activities.

A social prescriber (also called a social prescribing link worker) spends time with the patient that has been referred. They will agree a plan to help improve the patient’s health and wellbeing. Time spent with each patient depends on their needs.
